Cypriot President, Demetris Christofias on Wednesday received the Ambassador of China Mr Zhao Yali, with whom he discussed bilateral relations, the latest developments in the Cyprus problem, and various regional issues.
The Chinese Ambassador briefed President Christofias on the latest actions of the Taiwan leadership
to organize a referendum for UN membership.
Mr Christofias told the Chinese official that he looked forward to the continuation
and intensification of the cooperation between the Governments of China and
Cyprus in all sectors.
Referring to the developments regarding Taiwan, Christofias underlined that
Cyprus remained firm and steadfast to the principle of “a single China”,
the fundamental parameter of which is that Taiwan is an inextricable part of
China.
“We deplore,” he said, “the intention of the leadership of
Taiwan to organize a referendum for membership to the United Nations Organisation.
We consider that the organisation of a referendum constitutes part of the efforts
for the secession of Taiwan from China. Such an action will definitely have
negative repercussions on peace and stability not only in Eastern Asia, but
internationally”.
The Chinese Ambassador, meanwhile, underlined the continuous and unwavering support of China for the efforts
in finding a just, viable and functional solution to the Cyprus problem, on
the basis of the United Nations resolutions and international law:
“China,” he stressed, “remains by the side of Cyprus in this
new period, during which developments are expected in the Cyprus problem.”
He added that his country, as a Permanent Member of the United Nations
Security Council, supports the implementation of the 8th July Agreement, which
will contribute in the promotion of substantive talks for finding a solution
to the problem.
