Panama’s Ties To Taiwan Unaffected By Trade With China
by Mike Godfrey, Tax-News.com, Washington

13 December 2004

Panamanian First Vice President and Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Lewis Navarro commented last week that Panama’s growing trade relationship with the People’s Republic of China will have no bearing on the country’s diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

Lewis Navarro’s remarks, made during a press conference marking the 100th day in office of new President Martin Torrijos, came in response to a question concerning Panama’s intentions on the issue of diplomatic relations with China.

Lewis Navarro responded by restating the government’s policy of maintaining diplomatic relations with Taiwan, whilst seeking to increase trade ties with China.

He noted that China is now playing an increasingly large part in world trade, and is one of the heaviest users of the Panama Canal.

China, which continues to dispute Taiwan’s sovereignty, generally frowns upon governments that form diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
