OFT Steps In Over Misleading Domain Name Registrations
The UK's Office of Fair Trading (OFT) on Monday revealed that it has clamped
down on an internet domain name registrar which attempted to mislead businesses
in order to persuade them to register domains with it. Following complaints that the Internet Registrations Bureau Limited (IRBL),
trading as Euro Web Designs, was cold-calling businesses and informing them
that a third party was about to register their business name as an internet
domain name, when in fact no such third party existed, the OFT acted under the
1988 Control of Misleading Advertisements Regulations to stop the practice. The OFT explained on Monday that it has received written undertakings from
the directors of the company, Paul Dilling and Susan Ford that they will no
longer make such claims in their attempts to sell domain names to businesses. John Vickers, chairman of the OFT announced that: "We will continue to crack down on advertisers who make misleading claims
about their services. Businesses should be wary of domain name registration
companies cold calling and putting pressure on them to purchase names in haste." .
