OECD Adopts E-Commerce Consumer Protection Guidelines
The
29 members of the Organization
for Economic and Cooperative Development have agreed to adopt
voluntary e-commerce consumer protection guidelines. The OECD guidelines
aim to provide internet consumers with the same level of consumer
protection, credit card security, and privacy in financial transactions
as customers are entitled to expect from bricks and mortar retailers. A spokesperson
for the US government said that US consumer protection laws
are already consistent with OECD guidelines. Apart from the other
28 countries that are members of the OECD it is likely that many
other countries will use the OECD guidelines as a model for their
own laws, as has often been the case with other OECD guidelines
on tax and trade issues. .
