New York Owed Millions In Taxes By Overseas Governments
By by Glen Shapiro, LawAndTax-News.com, New York

14 December 2005

According to an Associated Press report published this week, foreign governments owe the New York City authorities in the region of $200 million in unpaid property taxes.

Although embassies, consulates and diplomatic missions are customarily tax exempt, New York tax rules state that parts of such buildings used for non-diplomatic purposes, such as restaurants or housing, may be taxed.

The AP revealed that the New York authorities have taken legal action over the disputed property tax bills of diplomats from India, the Philippines, and the Mongolian Peoples Republic.

Hungary, Libya, Rwanda, Nigeria and Uganda also owe substantial amounts.
