President of the Republic of Cyprus, Tassos Papadopoulos, this week at a formal ceremony at the Presidential Palace, received the credentials of the new Ambassador of Mexico, based in Athens, Manuel Cosio Duran.

Presenting his credentials, the new Ambassador of Mexico observed that:

"Mexico and Cyprus share a long tradition of friendship and cooperation that has been consolidated throughout the years. The Agreement of Economic Association, Political Agreement and Co-operation between Mexico and the European Union gave a new dimension to our bilateral relation when Cyprus became a member of the EU in May 2004."

He continued: "In this context, Mexico congratulates Cyprus for its entry into the eurozone and hopes that this positive economic development will yield well-being and prosperity to the whole country, further enriching its perspectives in the international arena."

"The Mexican government sincerely appreciates the valuable support that Cyprus offers to the Mexican candidacies in international organizations while it also responds in a positive way to the Cypriot aspirations," he went on to add.

The Mexican Ambassador continued: "It is a fact that there is already a rich dialogue and cooperation at the bilateral level and Mexico is deeply interested in promoting and strengthening it even further. As an example of this willingness I would like to mention the recent creation (November 2007) of a Mexico - Cyprus Parliamentary Friendship Group within the Mexican Chamber of Deputies."

"This Group is constituted of two members of the Parliament and aims at fostering cultural links, developing friendly relations and enhancing interaction between our countries. I believe that the constitution of a similar Friendship Group within the Cypriot Parliament would highly contribute to these efforts. Moreover Mexico and Cyprus could celebrate an Interparliamentary Meeting that would enhance our bilateral cooperation."

The Ambassador concluded:

"Finally, I would like to reiterate the support of Mexico to a solution of the Cypriot conflict based on the UN Security Council decisions and resolutions. My country looks forward to the reunification of the island and its prosperity as a whole."
