New Cypriot Deputy Attorney General Sworn In

The new Deputy Attorney General of Cyprus, Akis Papasavvas, announced on Tuesday that he would perform his duties with impartiality and efficiency, during his swearing in ceremony at the Presidential Palace, before the President of the Republic.

He thanked the President for appointing him Deputy Attorney General of the Republic, and assured him that he would do his utmost to meet the expectations and safeguard the rights of the people of Cyprus.

In his speech, President Christofias explained that the consolidation of good governance and the state of law, the safeguarding of transparency and equality before the law, in the framework of a just society, constitute the primary aim of his government.

The protection of the rights as well as the dignity of the citizens is necessary for the smooth operation of the Republic and its institutions, he observed, adding that the Republic of Cyprus has a duty, and must demonstrate particular sensitivity in the strict observance of democratic procedures.

Noting that Mr Papasavvas was taking over the post at a very important period for Cyprus, President Christofias stated that he had no doubt that the new Deputy Attorney General would honour his mission, based on his life experience, his deep-seated democratic sense, and his unwavering dedication to the principles of democracy.
