New BVI Airport Remains On Track

The government of the British Virgin Islands has announced that environmental impact assessments for the new airport on the island of Virgin Gorda are due to be completed by the end of next month.

According to the BVI government's information service, Permanent Secretary in the Premier's Office Rosalie Adams told the Department of Information and Public Relations that a final report will be submitted to government in October when these studies are complete. The findings of the surveys will be incorporated into the design of the airport to minimise any potential negative impact.

Once the design has been finalised and approved by the cabinet, the government will then embark on the tendering process for a contractor.

BVI leader Ralph T. O’Neal signed a contract with British firm Halcrow Group in July for the re-development of the airstrip on Virgin Gorda into a new airport.

The airport will replace an airstrip originally constructed in the 1960s by the owners of Little Dix Bay Hotel, who owned and operated the facility as a private entity up until the late 1990s when it was purchased by the BVI government. The airport will be brought up to international standards and be capable of accommodating 19-seater aircraft.
