Netherlands Antilles To Get 53 Million Dutch Guilder Cash Injection
by Amanda Banks, Tax-News.com, London

13 December 2001

In keeping with recommendations made by the IMF, the Antillean House in The Hague has announced that as a result of the discussions between Prime Minister Miguel Pourier and State Secretary Gijs de Vries on December 6, it has decided to provide the Netherlands Antilles with extra support in the form of 53 million Dutch guilders.

According to the Daily Herald online news service, the cash will be provided as an addition to the usual aid given to the Antillean government to compensate for the drop in revenues on the federal budget due to the events of September 11, covering the period of November 2001 to April 2002.

The Netherlands Antilles central government will no doubt welcome the extra cash with open arms. As an example, earlier in December it endeavoured to help the Antillean Island of St Maarten when it agreed to pay NAf 2 million in outstanding turnover tax to the Island government. However, St Maarten's plight is so severe that Finance Commissioner Sarah Wescott-Williams told reporters that it has only 'helped a little' considering the Island's worsening financial status; but the cash-strapped central government could do no more.
