Mauritius Offers Tax Breaks To Attract Indian Software Firms
Mauritius is keen to attract Indian software companies to locate in the jurisdiction,
and is prepared to offer substantial tax breaks and visa concessions in order
to do so, according to Prem Nababsing. Speaking at the weekend, the chairman of the Mauritius board of investment
revealed that the government is aware of its shortcomings in the IT sector,
and is looking to address them. The Times of India quoted Mr Nababsing as announcing
that incentives such as a zero rate of taxation until 2008, and favourable conditions
for obtaining business work permits and visas will be available to Indian software
firms which choose to locate in Mauritius. Addressing the members of the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture,
the board of investment chief revealed that leading Indian IT company, Infosys,
was first off the mark in leasing space in the jurisdiction's cyber park, currently
under construction. Infosys reportedly plans to locate its disaster recovery unit on the island,
and recently obtained a blanket visa for 1,500 workers from the Mauritian government. .
