Malta And UAE To Discuss Proposed Double Tax Treaty
by Robert Lee, Tax-News.com, London

17 December 2002

A high-level delegation from Malta is visiting the United Arab Emirates to discuss a double-taxation avoidance treaty between the two jurisdictions, according to a report from the Gulf News Online news service.

Speaking on Saturday, Minister for Economic Services, Professor Josef Bonnici announced that:

'The finance ministers of the two countries are meeting today and such a treaty would be among the topics raised.'

Malta also opened a trade office in Dubai at the weekend, and it is hoped that the closer co-operation will increase trade in oil between the two countries. Currently, some 50% of Malta's requirements in that department are met by Libya, according to Gulf News Online.

Professor Bonnici confirmed this possibility at the weekend, explaining that:

'Direct oil imports from the UAE are something which we can look to develop. We are very open to any suggestions.'
