Swiss Federal Councillor Micheline Calmy-Rey, Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), on Friday received Jean Asselborn, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, on the occasion of an official working visit to Bern.
Both parties noted the excellent state of bilateral relations between the two
countries.
Mrs Calmy-Rey pointed out that bilateral relations between Switzerland and
the Grand Duchy go back a very long way, explaining that it was in 1309 in its earliest
days that the Swiss Confederation had its first diplomatic success with the
granting of "imperial immediacy" (a form of statehood) to the cantons
of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwald by Henri VII of Luxembourg, who was to be crowned
Holy Roman Emperor by the Pope.
Currently, the two nations enjoy very close bilateral relations, often adopting
very similar positions in the realm of international affairs.
The Head of the FDFA outlined Switzerland's European priorities to her opposite
number, beginning with implementation and consolidation of the various bilateral
agreements between Switzerland and the European Union, and in particular renewal
of the agreement on the free movement of persons beyond the year 2009, its extension
to the new EU member states, and the Schengen/Dublin Association Agreements.
The discussions also touched on the agreement between Switzerland and the EU
on the taxation of savings income and the relevant cantonal regulations.
The two delegations additionally discussed a number of other matters of current international
concern.
