Legal Secretaries Face Job Losses In The UK As Functions Outsourced
by Robin Pilgrim, LawAndTax-News.com, London

10 December 2003

Thousands of legal secretaries in the United Kingdom could lose their jobs as increasing numbers of solicitors outsource certain office functions to lower cost countries such as India, according to reports.

Legal secretaries prepare legal files, produce legal documents, and liaise with clients. However, advances in technology have meant that some of the functions performed by legal secretaries in the UK can now be transferred overseas with very little disruption to clients.

As a result, some law firms are opting to outsource the production of legal documents to centres employing graduates in India, a development which, it has been estimated, could create around 20,000 job losses in the United Kingdom.

The Law Society has stressed that the liability for ensuring client security and confidentiality with regard to outsourcing relationships remains with the firms which choose to employ such practices.
