Taxware, a leading provider of worldwide commercial tax compliance systems
announced that Charles D. Collins, Jr. has joined the company as director of
government affairs. For the past three years, Collins has been Co-Chair of the
Streamlined Sales Tax Project (SSTP), the grouping of thirty-nine states which
has been developing a radically simplified sales and use tax structure to allow
the taxation of cross-border Internet sales on a coherent, national basis.
At Taxware, Charles Collins will be responsible for maintaining and enhancing
the company’s relationships with legislative and regulatory bodies worldwide.
“We are truly excited to have someone of Charles’ caliber joining
the Taxware family,” said Mike Mancinelli, president of Taxware. “His
expertise in sales and use taxes is an incredible asset to Taxware and further
demonstrates our commitment to being the number one transaction tax solution.
Charles will add to the company’s innovative culture and help produce even
more ground-breaking products and services for our clients.”
The SSTP is getting close to agreement on a model sale and use tax Act which
all participating states will agree to adopt, opening the way for Congress to
legislate nationally in prepaqration for the expiration of the moratorium on
Internet taxation which was extended for two years in 2001 and will run out
next year.
In 2000, the SSTP authorized a Pilot Project under which Certified Service
Providers would assume the sales and use tax compliance burden for merchants
doing business in Kansas, Michigan, North Carolina and Wisconsin. Taxware was
the first Certified Service Provider to successfully bring a merchant live during
the pilot period. The scheme is still running, and vendors involved in the scheme
have asked to continue with it when it officially ends.
“Charles is a leading authority on transaction tax simplification, and
his addition to the Taxware team is one of many actions we are taking to ensure
that we remain at the forefront of the worldwide simplification effort,”
said Jon Abolins, Taxware’s Vice President of Tax and Government Affairs.
“Taxware is a leader in the tax compliance industry and more importantly
a believer in tax simplification. I am looking forward to helping them provide
painless solutions to businesses and governments around the world,” said
Collins. “I am excited about this opportunity with Taxware and to be able
to continue to work on the simplification effort.”
