Judicial Independence To Be Enshrined In UK Law, Says Lord Chancellor
by Robin Pilgrim, LawAndTax-News.com, London

12 December 2003

Speaking at a recent seminar sponsored by the Law Sociaty and the Institute for Public Policy Research, UK Lord Chancellor, Lord Falconer revealed that following its review of the legal sector in the United Kingdom, the government plans to enshrine the independence of the judiciary in law.

"For the first time ever in Britain, the independence of the judiciary will be provided for explicitly by law. The Constitutional Reform Bill we announced in the Queen's speech will include the independence of the judiciary on the face of the Bill," he announced.

Lord Falconer went on to explain that this was considered to be a key priority because judicial independence is "too important to this country and to this government to be any longer left unspecified, uncodified, unwritten".

This announcement was welcomed by the Law Society.
