Jersey Telecoms further
strengthened its relationship with global telecommunications provider,
Cable & Wireless when senior representative of both companies
met in the Island to formally mark the commissioning today of
a new high capacity communications link to the UK.
Jersey Telecoms'
highly resilient network is linked to the mainland by two submarine
fibre optic cables, one running directly from Jersey and the other
via Guernsey. A third link in Southern England creates a self-healing
ring so that in the unlikely event of a cable break, traffic is
automatically re-routed and service maintained.
To add even greater
call capacity and offer the opportunity for new services, Cable
& Wireless has provided a 155Mbit/s link within the existing
fibre optic system that will benefit Jersey Telecoms' customers.
The technology employed to carry information over these connections
will help provide near unlimited off island call traffic capacity.
The new link connects
JT directly to the network of Cable & Wireless, one of the
world's leading global telecommunications carriers, and provides
even more choice for the interconnection of telephone calls and
services off the Island.
Bob Lawrence, Executive
Director of Jersey Telecoms said:
"Jersey Telecoms is committed to working with leading global
communications companies in order to better serve our customers.
Cable & Wireless is just such an organisation and we are pleased
to be strengthening our long standing and successful relationship
with them."
Also present in Jersey
for the opening was Derek Munn, Customer Director, International
Carrier Services of Cable & Wireless who said:
"Cable & Wireless is delighted to have this link in place
and looks forward to building upon the excellent relationship
with Jersey Telecoms to develop a range of enhanced products and
services to suit the requirements of our collective customer base."
