Jersey Stakes Its Claim at British-Irish Council Meeting
By Tax-news.com

19 December 1999

At the recent British Council of the Isles meeting which included the new Northern Irish Government, Jersey representative Senator Pierre Horsfall made a clear statement that the island intends to ensure that its voice is heard and its interests are protected. Senator Horsfall told British Prime Minister Tony Blair and the other six leaders present that although Jersey has always valued the protection and support of the UK government in international affairs, 'we must all accept that our interests can and do diverge at times'.

The statement by Senator Horsfall has been interpreted as a response to recent threats to Jersey's independent tax status by the EU and OECD and a veiled criticism of the way the UK has handled the Edwards Review.

Senator Horsfall also seized the opportunity to promote Jersey's business sector by telling the council that that small communities like Jersey are often able to respond quicker with more innovative solutions to policy issues than their bigger neighbours. 'We shall, for example, have a comprehensive e-commerce law in place within the next three months, coupled with an island-wide information technology strategy supported by significant public investment,' the Senator said.
