Jersey P&R President Granted Authority To Sign US Tax Treaty
by Jason Gorringe, Tax-News.com, London

25 October 2002

The Jersey Evening Post reported this week that Policy and Resources Committee President, Senator Pierre Horsfall will be travelling to the United States in early November to sign an international tax treaty; the first time that the jurisdiction has been able to do this on its own behalf.

Although the signing of the agreement has been in the pipeline for some time now, it was first necessary for the United Kingdom to sign a letter of entrustment. Senator Horsfall also needed to receive the approval of the Jersey States authorities to sign the document on their behalf, and this was granted on Tuesday.

Speaking to the JEP this week regarding the P&R chief's forthcoming visit to Washington, Senator Christopher Lakeman described the situation as 'entirely novel', and suggested that such a move on the part of the UK government clearly indicates its awareness of Jersey's growing maturity as a player on the international stage.
