Jersey Mulls Residential Contracts for Migrant Workers
Tax-news.com

Worried
that current policies are not controlling population growth,
Jersey is considering a new form of contract which would commit
immigrant and migratory workers to a set period of stay in a given
employment and in stated accommodation. On 13 September the States'
Policy and Resources Committee will meet with 15 organisations
who are concerned that existing laws are ineffective. Robert Weston,
a hotelier and a driving force over the issue hopes that the majority
of organisations participating will reach agreement on an 'alternative
but credible' immigration policy. Mr Weston thinks that this will
stop the finance industry poaching staff from other sectors, and
will stabilise salaries. He does not consider that such a contract
would contravene the human rights conventions by which Jersey
will soon be bound.
