A group of finance industry professionals from Jersey visited Bahrain last
weekend to highlight the Island’s skills as a centre for Sharia compliant
investment business.
They participated in the World Islamic Banking Conference and joined representatives
from Jersey Finance Limited, a co-sponsor of the event. Keynote speakers at
the three day conference included the Governors of the Central Banks of Bahrain
and Kuwait, and management guru Tom Peters.
This year's conference was the largest so far, with more than 800 delegates
from thirty countries attending the opening ceremony at the Gulf International
Convention Centre in Bahrain.
The Jersey group included representatives from Volaw Trust, the company responsible
for the award winning Caravan Sukuk and other Sharia compliant structures;
Mourant Private Wealth, which established a representative office in Dubai in
2005; Carey Olsen, which has an established contact with Ohad Trust in Bahrain;
Walkers, which recently merged with Jersey based firm Crills Advocates, and through
its network of worldwide offices also has a full service office in Dubai;
and Minerva Financial Services Limited wich now has an associate, Rocklin SA,
based in the UAE.
"There is a growing appetite for Jersey’s Finance Industry to focus
on specialist financial services," explained Beverley Le Cuirot, Director of
Marketing, Jersey Finance.
"This important annual conference, in one of the leading finance centres
in the Middle East region, provides us with an ideal opportunity to highlight
how we continue to develop structures and services specifically for the Islamic
banking and investment marketplace, alongside our more traditional wealth management
offering," she concluded.
