Jersey Builds Closer Relationship With Hong Kong

Hong Kong remains the key location in the Far East if Jersey wishes to develop more financial services business with China, according to Technical Director at Jersey Finance, Robert Kirkby.

Mr Kirkby, who has recently returned from a fact-finding mission to China, believes that the Industry should devote resources to building its ties with Hong Kong, which is the gateway to the business opportunities in some of the major cities in China including Shanghai and Shenzhen.

The aim of the latest visit was to talk to the main practitioners that make financial decisions on behalf of wealthy Chinese investors and entrepreneurs, and the visit included meetings with key intermediaries, large banks and major law and accountancy firms.

Jersey Finance has paid several visits to Hong Kong and the wider region in recent years, and will continue to do so.

A further visit to Hong Kong and China is planned for September this year. On the agenda will be discussions about the possibility of enabling Jersey companies greater access to local markets and obtaining equivalence.

Mr Kirkby commented:

"Jersey is already winning listing business from Asian clients seeking to list on Exchanges in Europe for investment purposes, but the Island would be an even more attractive option if investors were able to dual list on the Asian Exchange also."

In another move to build business relationships in Asia, Jersey Finance has agreed to be one of the sponsors of the Boao Forum for Asia held in London between the 3rd and 5th of June, the first time this prestigious event has been held outside of Asia.

Taking place over three days, the event enabled more than 200 Chinese business leaders to explore investment opportunities within Europe.

The Boao Forum for Asia is the leading forum for leaders in business, government and academia in Asia.

"More than half the Asian delegates attending are from companies with turnovers in excess of GBP700mn and many are seeking to participate in the international capital markets. Jersey is well positioned to provide the structures they require for listing purposes. We see the event as an ideal opportunity to reach many key Asian decision makers and it’s taking place virtually on our doorstep," Kirkby announced ahead of the event.
