Jersey Airport Welcomes New BA Aircraft
by Jason Gorringe, Tax-News.com, London

01 August 2008

It was announced this week that a new aircraft will soon be introduced by British Airways on its Gatwick to Jersey service.

The Airbus A319, which is more fuel efficient and subsequently more environmentally friendly than the Boeing 737 currently used, will gradually be introduced on the route from the beginning of August 2008.

The A319 is one of Airbus’ highly successful single aisle aircraft and can carry a maximum of 128 passengers in a 2 cabin layout, Club Europe and Euro Traveller, which is an increase of 22 seats per flight. The A319 will primarily operate on domestic services as British Airways starts to replace the existing Boeing 737 fleet at London Gatwick.

Jersey's Assistant Minister for Economic Development, Deputy Alan Maclean, who has specific responsibility for Jersey Airport, welcomed the news, announcing that:

“We are delighted that British Airways has shown such confidence in their Gatwick route. The Airbus A319 is a larger, greener, up-to-date aircraft and will replace the workhorse 737s that have served the Island so well. In these days of high oil prices and fuel surcharges we all welcome more fuel-efficient aircraft that can only help to sustain the viability of our important air links.”
