Japan, US and Europe Join Forces To Speed Processing Of Patent Applications
by Mary Swire, for LawAndTax-News.com, Hong Kong

14 December 2004

According to reports in the Japanese media, the patent offices of Japan, the United States and the European Union have joined forces in an attempt to speed the processing of patent applications filed in more than one country.

Currently, applications filed by the same entity in separate countries are examined by the patent authorities in each. However, under new measures to be implemented shortly, translation equipment will be employed, allowing examiners in one country to make use of data gathered by their counterparts in another.

The Nihon Keiza Shimbun, reporting at the weekend, revealed that the Japanese patent office has already introduced machinery capable of translating from Japanese to English, and announced that the introduction of similar capabilities for French to English and German to English translation is planned in the near future.

In addition, the newspaper revealed that from April 2005, Japan, the US and EU member states will exchange personnel in order to ensure that the translation system is operating as intended.
