Isle Of Man Updates EU Legislation
Tax-News.com, London

27 December 2002

The Isle of Man Chief Minister's Office has announced that it is promoting a short Bill to update the list of treaties referred to in the legislation which gives effect to the Island's special relationship with the European Union.

The European Communities (Amendment) Bill 2002 adds the Treaty of Nice to the list of treaties to which the European Communities (Isle of Man) Act 1973 applies. The Treaty of Nice makes changes to EU institutions necessary to allow enlargement of the Union.

The Island's European Communities legislation is amended in this way each time there is a new EU Treaty - previous examples include the Accession Treaty of Austria, Finland and Sweden, the Maastricht Treaty and the Treaty of Amsterdam. These amendments reflect changes in the European Union, but do not alter the Isle of Man's special relationship with the EU as set out in Protocol 3 of the UK's 1972 Act of Accession. to the Community, as it then was.
