Irish Revenue Commission Reports Surge in Online Filing
by Jason Gorringe, Tax-News.com, London

27 November 2003

The Irish Revenue Commission announced last Friday that it has experienced a large increase in volume in the number of taxpayers using the online return system known as ROS, and that it has decided to adopt a lenient approach to those who miss the filing deadline resulting from any technical difficulties.

In a statement, the Revenue said: “The Commissioners welcomed in particular the large number of new customers that have signed-up to ROS over the last couple of weeks. While welcoming this move by taxpayers and practitioners to doing business on-line, they acknowledge that the sheer volume has in some cases caused difficulties for people.

“In view of this the Commissioners confirmed today that while today's filing date is not being extended they will be taking a sensible and pragmatic approach and will not be applying surcharges or interest where returns are received over the next few days and people have made a genuine effort to meet the filing date.”
