By by Jason Gorringe, Tax-News.com, London

23 December 2003

The Irish Revenue Commission last week published its list of tax defaulters for the period of July to September 2003 in its regular quarterly 'name and shame' exercise.

The list is published in two parts, the first part of which names every person who has been fined for transgressions such as failure to file a tax return, filing an incorrect return or various excise and licensing offences.

The second part of the list details audit settlements where the Revenue Commissioners accepted a specified sum in excess of €12,700 in settlement of any additional liability for tax, interest and penalties instead of instituting proceedings for the recovery of the penalties.

According to the Revenue Commission’s figures, in the 3 month period to 30 September 2003 there were 371 settlements in excess of €12,700 which fall to be published with the settlements in these cases totalling €43.16 million.

Of the 371 published settlements 80 were for amounts exceeding €100,000; 11 exceeded €500,000 and 5 exceeded €1,000,000.
