Irish Government Slammed Over 'Stealth Taxes'
by Jason Gorringe, Tax-News.com, London

17 November 2003

Irish Finance Minister, Charlie McCreevy has come under fire following Thursday's revelation that he intends to raise around EUR91 million by imposing new taxes.

In his Book of Estimates, the Finance Minister unveiled plans for a EUR40 billion spending package, and explained that in order to help fund it, he would be increasing car taxes, hospital and passport charges, and exam fees, amongst other measures.

He also revealed that EUR58 million of spending on social welfare schemes is likely to be cut.

According to reports, the majority of the additional money raised by what many have dubbed the new 'stealth taxes' will go towards benchmarking pay awards for public servants.
