Irish Farmers Win £20 Million In Tax Relief
by Jason Gorringe, Tax-News.com, London

01 November 2001

Angry Irish farmers who initiated High Court proceedings over the scrapping of a planned £20 millon tax break were delighted when the government announced that the relief measure would take place as originally announced by Finance Minister Charlie McCreevy.

The dairy farming industry in Ireland began legal action last month over a block on tax relief on milk quota purchases by the European Commission, but announced that it would be abandoning the fight when Agriculture Minister Joe Walsh said that he had sought clarification from the EC, and that the concessions would be going ahead as planned.

The industry body, the Irish Creamery and Milk Suppliers Association issued a statement earlier this week, in which it welcomed the move on behalf of its members. 'This tax relief is of major importance to dairy farmers and will mean a tax saving of over £20 million for quota purchased to date,' it explained.
