by Jason Gorringe, Tax-News.com, London

11 September 2003

The Irish government represents the biggest threat to the competitiveness of the country's business sector warned the president of the Chambers of Commerce of Ireland Mark Staunton ahead of the organisation's annual general meeting this week.

Mr Staunton attacked the government for allowing an "unprecedented catalogue of increases" in business costs in sectors that were largely under its control, according to RTW News.

Calling for the government to "come clean" on stealth taxes, Staunton claimed that in the last 21 months, for businesses, electricity had risen by a quarter; VHI premiums had increased by 17% in the last year; postage stamps had gone up by 17%; and commercial rates had been hiked by 25%. He also criticised the 10% rise in the minimum wage due to take effect n February next year.
