Ireland To Relax Work Permit Rules For New EU Member States
Irish Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Mary Harney has announced
a change to foreign work permit rules which will allow preferential treatment
for workers from the ten acceding EU member states. According to a report from RTE, from the official enlargement date of May 1 next
year, employers will no longer need to apply for a work permit for workers originating
in those countries. At present, around 35% of work permits are granted to workers
from the new European Union members, and Harney has reportedly said that firms
should be able to fill all their posts from within the expanded EU. Four new categories have been included on the list for which work permits can
be applied. These are: HGV and articulated lorry drivers; aircraft mechanics and engineers,
fish processors; and plasterers. .
