It emerged this week that Enterprise Ireland, the Irish government's trade development organisation, is to establish a regional office in Dubai in order to maximise trade and strengthen economic ties between Ireland and the GCC.

Speaking to the Gulf News Online news service this week, Nicholas Marmion, Enterprise Ireland's regional director explained that: 'Dubai was selected for its strategic location, open business-friendly environment and the rapid progress of Dubai as a GCC distribution centre and IT knowledge hub.'

He added that: 'The office will also facilitate access for UAE companies to a large and renowned pool of Irish companies who do business in global markets.'

According to Gulf News Online, recent estimates put trade exchange between the United Arab Emirates and Ireland at around $250 million in 2001, with major markets including food products, industrial machinery, IT and communication technology equipment, and oil.
