Ireland Slides In Competitiveness Survey
by Jason Gorringe, Tax-News.com, London

The Irish government was no doubt disappointed to discover on Tuesday that the country had dropped an alarming thirteen places to be ranked 24th out of 80 countries in the World Economic Forum's annual competitiveness survey.

The reasons for the country's fall from grace are a drop in its technology ranking as a result of the slowdown in the electronics sector, and a decline in its economic conditions rating as a result of rampant government spending.

However, much to the relief of the Irish Independent, which reported this week on the survey results: 'Despite the planning scandals, Ireland has a relatively good index for corruption, coming 14th in the rankings and 6th in the EU, behind Finland, Denmark, Britain, Sweden and the Netherlands.'

It also emerged that the United States has snatched Finland's crown at the top of the list, a development which Director of the Global Competitiveness Programme at the World Economic Forum chief, Peter Cornelius explained was mainly due to 'its stellar performance on technology-related factors'.
