Ireland Not Planning 'Super Regulator' In Near Future, Ahern Announces
by Jason Gorringe, for LawAndTax-News.com, London

29 November 2004

Speaking at a recent Public Affairs Ireland conference, Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern dismissed speculation that the Irish government is planning to introduce a 'super-regulator' to oversee the regulatory bodies of the Republic's various industry sectors in the near future.

Although Mr Ahern pointed to the complexity of such a role as an obstacle, he acknowledged that:

"A super-regulator could certainly have a powerful role and would concentrate a huge amount of technical knowledge in one area."

However, went on to add that:

"Equally, given the disparate nature of the functions that independent regulators deal with - from licensing of travel agents, to the building of new power stations - the extent of the potential synergies may be overstated."

According to the Irish Independent, which reported on the "Regulating Ireland - new perspectives on regulatory reform and national competitiveness" conference, the Taoiseach went on to suggest that the key issue should be the quality of regulatory decisions rather than the number of regulators.
