IoM Treasury Minister Says No Decision On National Insurance Increase Yet
by Jason Gorringe, Tax-News.com, London

21 October 2002

Speaking in response to a question put forward in the Tynwald last week, Manx Treasury Minister, Allan Bell said that no decision has yet been taken on whether the Isle of Man will follow the UK's lead and increase National Insurance contributions.

The possibility has been the subject of some speculation since the measure was first announced by UK Chancellor Gordon Brown in his budget, earlier this year.

The Isle of Man Online news service reported late last week that Douglas North representative, Bill Henderson - who has previously quizzed the Treasury Minister on this issue - asked Mr Bell for an update on the situation on Tuesday.

Whilst stressing that no decision has yet been made, the Treasury chief explained that there are several options currently under consideration, and that he hopes to reach a decision before next year's budget is announced.

However, according to the IoM Online, Mr Bell refused to give an undertaking to bring any decision or proposal to the Tynwald first.
