by Glen Shapiro, LawAndTax-News.com, New York

11 December 2003

The inventor of the 56k modem, Brent Townshend has resolved one of a number of patent disputes over the technology contained within the device (also known as V.90 or V.92), for which he obtained an US patent in September 1998.

Although the exact financial terms of the agreement between Analog Devices and Townshend Intellectual Property have not been disclosed, it is thought that Analog Devices will pay the latter firm a lump sum, in addition to royalties for the future use of the technology.

According to reports, Townshend is still pursuing patent infringement lawsuits against various other technology firms, including Intel, Cisco, ESS Technology, and Agere Systems.
