Internet Privacy Showdown Expected In Congress
By Tax-news.com

22 November 1999

A showdown is expected next January in the U.S. Congress over two competing bills dealing with internet privacy - the Collection of Information Antipiracy Act (sponsored by Republican Howard Coble) and the Consumer and Investor Access to Information Act (sponsored by Republican Tom Bliley).

Both bills attempt to control the use of online databases and other information collected and stored over the Internet and could have a significant impact on the electronic commerce and Internet industry, where online search services, consumer data and market research have become cornerstones of online marketing strategies.

At this stage it seems the internet industry is putting its voice behind Bliley's Bill, with more than five dozen Internet and intellectual property heavyweights such as Yahoo!, MCI Worldcom, DLJ Direct, Inc. and Amazon having already backed it.
