Inquiry Into Tougher Copyright Protections Begins In Australia
A number of interest groups have weighed in following the launch of an inquiry
by the Australian authorities into the tougher copyright protections required
by the country's FTA with the United States. The Australian authorities are obliged, under the terms of the agreement, to
put in place by 2007 tougher penalties for those who circumvent technological
protection measures in order to infringe copyright. However, the government has launched an inquiry into the matter in order to
allow interested parties to request exceptions to the new laws. The Australian recording industry is reportedly happy with the legislation
as it stands. However, several parties, including New South Wales' Attorney
General, Linux Australia, and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation have all
made submissions to the government on the matter. .
