Immigration Department Launches E-Services In Dubai
By Lorys Charambolous, Cyprus

18 December 2000

Earlier this month the Dubai Naturalisation and Residency Department (DNRD) reported the launch of its Internet e-services, which means entry and residency applications and payment of charges can be made online.

Colonel Saeed bin Bleilah, director of DNRD, is quoted as saying: 'Through utilising this technology we have been able to update the administrative systems to eliminate routine paperwork, and our employees have started working more efficiently.'

The e-government initiative was established by General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince and UAE Defence Minister, under which all government departments must meet e-government requirements by October 2001.

Dubai is doing well in the e-commerce stakes and this latest move marks the Dubai government's determination to turn the jurisdiction into the Middle East's e-commerce hub. October 2000 saw a key development in this area - the establishment of Dubai Internet City (DIC), a free zone for e-commerce.
