The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) released on Monday the 2007 IRS Data Book, which is an annual snapshot of IRS activities over a fiscal year.

The report describes activities of the IRS from October 1st, 2006, to September 30th, 2007, and includes information about returns filed, tax collections, enforcement, taxpayer assistance, as well as the IRS budget and workforce.

During fiscal year 2007, the IRS collected almost USD2.4trillion in taxes (net of refunds) and processed more than 235 million returns.

More than 114 million individual income tax return filers received tax refunds that totaled USD248.6bn.

In fiscal year 2007, the IRS revealed, it spent an average of 40 cents to collect each USD100 of tax revenue, which was the lowest in seven years, and down from 42 cents per USD100 in fiscal year 2006.

The US tax authority examined nearly 1.4 million individual income tax returns in fiscal year 2007, the Data Book revealed.

It was additionally revealed that IRS personnel answered more than 33.2 million toll-free calls from taxpayers during the fiscal year, and the IRS Web site received approximately 215 million visits.
