18 June 2008

House members in the Bahamas passed the Government’s 2008/2009 Budget Bill early last Friday morning, following debate on the budget, which contained tax concessions that are among the most important offered to families in the history of The Bahamas, according to Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Hubert Ingraham.

The Budget Bill will now make its way to the Senate, where members of the Upper Chamber will commence debate.

Prior to passage of the Budget, as Prime Minister Ingraham wrapped up debate, he reiterated his confidence that the government’s Budget is able to meet the needs of the Bahamian people.

Ingraham touched on a number of issues during his debate wrap up, including the government’s plan for the introduction of a prescription drug and catastrophic healthcare plan, local government allocations and bank fee increases in this year’s budget.

The Prime Minister also responded to questions about campaign financing in the 2007 general election, and expounded on the unprecedented allocations given by the Government to the College of The Bahamas, and to students throughout the country.
