Hong Kong Extends Consultation On Political Reform
by Mary Swire, Tax-News.com, Hong Kong

30 September 2004

The government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region has announced an extension to the public consultation concerning the manner in which the city’s next political leader will be selected in 2007.

The decision to extend the closing date of the consultation to October 15 was made in the light of complaints by some lawmakers that they had not been given sufficient time to consider and respond to some of the public’s suggestions.

"We feel that to extend the deadline by two weeks is more reasonable so that will give all legislators ... one month to (respond)," Chief Secretary Donald Tsang told reporters on Tuesday.

Tsang is charged with heading up the Third Report of the Constitutional Development Task Force, which is collecting ideas on how Hong Kong’s future leader and legislature is to be selected.

Upon completion, this report will submitted to the Beijing authorities for consideration, although a final decision from the Chinese government is not anticipated for at least another year.
