HarperCollins Moves To Digitize Back Catalog, Retain Copyright Control
by Glen Shapiro, LawAndTax-News.com, New York

13 December 2005

Publishing firm HarperCollins announced this week that it intends to digitize an increasing proportion of its back catalog to make titles searchable under initiatives such as those announced this year by Google and Yahoo, but that it will retain the copyrighted files.

The online search portals have stated their intention to allow internet users to search the text of certain copyrighted print works, proposals which have angered many publishing firms and authors.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal with regard to HarperCollins' proactive stance on the issue, the firm's chief executive, Jane Friedman announced that:

"Now is the time to build a digital infrastructure that will allow us to protect our rights and the rights of our authors. We will make all of our books available digitally, but we will store the dogital copies and license them out to those who want to use them."

She added:

"We didn't like being seen as Luddites. We see what's going on, and we get it. We want to be the best collaborator, but we also want to take charge of our future."
