Guernsey Plans Free Internet Access
Tax-news.com

04 September 1999

Responding to developments in the UK, Guernsey Telecom Board plans to provide free Internet access through a new site, GT On-Line, which will absorb Telecoms' existing ISP, Cinergy. The new system will also have its own portal to provide local information. Subscribers may utilise a number of servers. Call charges will remain competitive at 2p per minute during peak hours and 1p at all other times.

In the wake of insecurity over Hotmail accounts, Telecom said that the most recent security systems would be used. Telecoms chief executive, David Coleman, believes that the island is on the verge of developing a major growth industry in Internet services which should benefit the whole community.

Existing Cinergy subscribers will be offered the opportunity to have the free access service over the coming weeks.
