Guernsey Chief Minister Has Eye Towards 'Long Term Legacy'
by Jason Gorringe Tax, News.com, London

25 June 2008

Guernsey's Chief Minister, Lyndon Trott last week revealed that his vision for the future is to leave some long-term legacies.

"Those legacies I hope will include a lasting but adaptable economy in this changing world, a strong international persona and a serious, measured and appropriate response to the challenge of the demographic change that looms before us," Mr Trott announced at a recent Chamber of Commerce lunch.

He continued: "So often, not just in Guernsey but elsewhere, Politicians knowing they have four years to serve with no certainty of continuing political life beyond that point choose to focus all and every effort on pleasing those around them with comfortable and popular short term decisions with no regard for the difficult challenges of preparing for the long term."

And concluded that: "While that may be a basis for an easy ride and re-election, it is not the basis of sound government. At least, its not as far as I am concerned."
