The Grenadian Chief Executive of Cable and Wireless St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Angus
Steele, has taken over the presidency of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Chamber
of Commerce.
Steele, a former Vice President of Operations and Head of Customer Care at
Cable & Wireless Grenada, was elected to the post at a general meeting of
the St Vincent and the Grenadines Chamber on 16th July, 2008.
“It’s a pleasure for me to be chosen to serve as the President
of the St Vincent & The Grenadines Chamber of Industry and Commerce and
this once again demonstrates that CSME is working and would continue to be good
for our region and island states," Mr Steele announced upon his appointment.
Steele, who was a Board Member of the Grenada Chamber of Industry & Commerce
until his departure from Grenada in December 2007, expressed his desire to work
with the business community in St Vincent and the Grenadines during his tenure
in office:
“As the head of a business operating within St. Vincent & The Grenadines,
I recognize the importance of the Chamber in working with all businesses within
the community and I remain committed, along with the rest of the new leadership,
to serve all those businesses well through advocacy, business development services
and strategic alliances," he explained.
Steele takes over the position from Gerry George, the Corporate Communications Manager
of arch rival Digicel. George told reporters in St Vincent and the Grenadines that
he believed the Chamber had achieved much during his presidency.
The new leadership team includes Senior Vice President Andrew Woodroffe, and
Vice President of Finance and Administration, Samuel Goodluck.
According to a report in the Searchlight newspaper in Kingstown, some members
of the Chamber have questioned Mr Steele’s ability to lead the organisation,
given that he is non-Vincentian.
However, in a statement on the appointment by the Grenadian government, it was observed that:
"Mr Steele won a democratic election within a Vincentian organisation."
