Gozo To Have Cruiseliner Berthing Facilities Shortly
by Ulrika Lomas, for LawAndTax-News.com, Brussels

05 August 2008

Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, announced on Friday that the required permits in connection with berthing facilities for cruiseliners at Xlendi Bay have been issued by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA).

This announcement was made during a visit near the site where the berth will be anchored.

Minister Debono explained that the tourism industry on Gozo will be able to gain from the increase in cruiseliner business, which has become an integral part of the Maltese tourist market.

The whole island will be able to share in the economic benefit this brings to Malta, she observed.

The Minister stated that tourism is a strong pillar in the country’s socio-economic development, but this is especially so with regards to the island of Gozo.

Gozo should be marketed as a distinct destination and the Ministry for Gozo has endeavoured to keep this policy at the centre of its strategy, she revealed.

The particular challenges faced by the tourism industry on Gozo - amongst which accessibility, seasonality and an appropriate marketing strategy - have all been addressed and will continue to be addressed, the Minister announced.
