Governor James Gilmore III Interview on Internet Taxation
Tax-news.com

19 April 1999

Governor James Gilmore III of Virginia gave an interview about Internet taxation. Gilmore will probably be the first Chairman of the Federal Advisory Commission on Electronic Commerce, the body which will likely determine the shape of Internet taxation in the US. To date, business wants Internet taxation left as it is (ie in practice no taxation of remote vendors if they don't have 'nexus' = a foot on the ground in a given jurisdiction), while the States want remote vendors to be taxed (well they would, wouldn't they!). Governor Gilmore's interview showed that the debate was at a very early stage, so there is no immediate threat to offshore e-commerce.
