Fenech Speaks On Launch Of New HSBC Branch
by Carla Johnson, Investors Offshore.com, London

14 February 2008

Tonio Fenech, the Maltese Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Finance on Wednesday spoke at the opening of a new branch of HSBC Bank Malta.

Fenech announced that:

"It is my pleasure to be here today to open these new premises of HSBC Bank Malta in Attard. I thank HSBC Bank Malta for inviting and for its ongoing commitment to the development and upgrading of Malta’s financial services sector."

"As you are all aware Government’s current legislature is coming to an end and in less than a month’s time the Maltese electorate will have chosen who it wants to lead them for the next 5 years."

"While the focus is on the future, or shall I say on promises of a better future, it is opportune to reflect on what has been achieved in the recent past as Government’s track record is the best way to judge what can be expected in the future and far more important than any political rhetoric."

"For this reason, the opening of this HSBC branch in Attard is truly significant."

He went on to add that: "These new premises will add to the already extensive network of offices HSBC has in Malta and Gozo and bring its full range of financial services and international reach closer to the community of Attard. This is definitely a commitment to the future and belief in the growth potential of the local market."

"However, these new Attard premises are also testament to the wise policy decision taken by Government to attract HSBC, one of the world’s most reputable financial services organisations, to our shores."

The Finance Ministry Parliamentary Secretary continued:

"HSBC has played a significant role in the development of Malta’s financial services sector. When it first arrived in 1999 it pledged a long term commitment to Malta’s economic and social development."

"And it has not gone back on its word."

"During the past 9 years HSBC has brought to Malta innovative products and services, developed new lines of business, introduced new work practices and provided us with a direct link to an international network of offices all over the world."

"Just as importantly, HSBC has never stopped investing in its local operations through upgrading its systems and processes, implementing the latest technology, modernising its offices and providing ongoing training and career development opportunities to its human resources."

Fenech concluded:

"While we are satisfied with the results attained so far, we are also conscious that there is more that remains to be done. With further integration in the EU through the adoption of the euro as our national currency and our promise to reduce taxes even further and continue pension and other reforms, I am certain we can improve the business environment and make it more efficient, and promote entrepreneurship and encourage creativity and innovation."

"Government will also continue to support and promote Malta as a financial services centre. The foundation of FinanceMalta is a positive contribution in this regard and I am pleased that HSBC is supporting us in this important initiative and am certain it will continue to do so."

"While wishing HSBC every success with this new Attard branch, I would also like to express my appreciation to HSBC Bank Malta’s CEO, Shaun Wallis, for his unstinting support to Malta and look forward to continue working with him and his colleagues in the future."
