Expat Workers In Bermuda Reach Record Levels
According to the 2001 Employment Survey released by the Bermudian government
last week, the number of expatriate workers employed in the jurisdiction reached
record levels last year. Reporting on the Department of Statistics figures on Wednesday, the Bermuda
Sun newspaper revealed that more than one in five jobs is now held by a guest
worker on a work permit, with no marital ties to Bermuda. The nearly 8,000 jobs held by expatriate workers in 2001 represents a jump
of 6% on the previous year, and according to the Bermuda Sun, the number of
expats employed on the Island has risen 21% since 1997. 'The Statistics Department confirmed that 2001 had the highest level of guest
workers since records began in the 1970s,' the newspaper reported. .
