European Parliament Would Prefer United Cyprus To Accede To EU

In its resolution on the Copenhagen European Council, adopted last week in Strasbourg, the European Parliament urged all parties involved to bring the Cyprus situation to a resolution by 28 February 2003, in order that a reunified Island can join the European Union in 2004.

Although a spokesman for Enlargement Commissioner Gunter Verheugen last week confirmed that the Copenhagen European Council's decision on Cyprus' accession to the European bloc is 'irreversible and without conditions', at a plenary on Thursday, the European Parliament announced that although it:

'Welcomes the fact that Cyprus will be admitted to the European Union as a new Member State...[it] nevertheless supports the European Council's strong preference for accession to the European Union by a united Cyprus and urges the Council and the Commission to make every effort to facilitate and conclude negotiations by 28 February 2003 and to support concretely those sectors of civil society on both sides striving for peace and dialogue.'

Meanwhile, House President of Panama, Carlos Alvarado expressed his government's support for for the peace talks during a five day visit to the country by Cyprus's Ambassador to Mexico and Panama, Antonis Toumazis.
